Erin Homburg, D.V.M.
Practice Owner

Hi!  I’m Dr. Erin Homburg, and I’m the new owner of Hill Country Veterinary Hospital!  I am thrilled to embark on this new adventure. This amazing hospital and its team has already created such an incredible relationship with the Cedar Park and Leander area, thanks to Dr. Benet Sandell.  I am so thankful for this opportunity and I appreciate Dr.  Sandell and the faith she is putting in me to carry on this awesome family legacy.   I hope to continue to build on the compassionate and caring culture she has created.

I was raised in southeast Texas and started working in a veterinary clinic the summer I turned 13.  I knew from that age I wanted nothing more than to be a veterinarian!  I worked every summer and holiday at Groves Veterinary Clinic, gaining as much experience as I could.  I graduated from Nederland High School in 1991 and went to Texas A&M University for my undergraduate education.  I then went on to attend veterinary school at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine.  I graduated from vet school in 1999 and my husband and I moved to Austin in 2000.  I worked in a couple of veterinary hospitals in town until I opened Austin Urban Veterinary Center in 2009.  We have grown to a five doctor practice now and I love the relationships we have built with the downtown community!  We continue to grow and plan to be in the downtown area for a long time!

My husband and I met at Texas A&M in 1992 and we have been married 21 years.  We have two amazing boys, Gavin, 14, and Logan, 5.  We have two dogs, Cassie the Frenchie and Gus the Terrier.  We are super fortunate to have the majority of our family within an hour of us so we get to spend a lot of time with them.  We love to snow ski, we enjoy the outdoors, and I love to scrapbook my kids’ lives!!

K. Benet Sandell, D.V.M.
Associate Veterinarian

I graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992 and started my veterinary career here at Hill Country Veterinary Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Alton Smith. I purchased the practice in January of 2000. It has been my pleasure and privilege to continue in Dr. Smith’s footsteps by providing quality veterinary care to all the families that have been faithful and loyal clients of this practice for so many years. It is this very trait that drew me to this practice, the family oriented atmosphere and the personable staff. I feel these qualities are what make this practice special and unique.

I have had a passion for this field since I was five years of age, and I continue to enjoy all the different aspects presented to me in the practice of veterinary medicine. My interests lie strongly in the field of surgery, both soft tissue and orthopedic, but I am constantly challenged and intrigued by my internal medicine cases. I continue to strive to improve both my knowledge and skills so that I might always provide the best service to my clients and their loved ones.

I am supported at home by my husband, Dean and my son, Zachary. When not working, I am usually spending time with family and that time usually involves some type of water activity. Swimming, skiing, boating or just hanging out at the lake, is what my family loves to do. I have always had a love for Sight hounds and currently our household is home to two young Whippets Gunnar and Cruz.

I am lucky to have grown up in Austin and have spent much of my life here. After discovering my fascination with anatomy and physiology in high school, I graduated with a degree in biology from University of Texas at Austin. While working in wild bird rehab, I discovered my love of veterinary medicine and went on to graduate from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine with honors. The following year I completed an internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialty Hospital. After my internship I moved back to join a small animal and exotic hospital where I practiced for 10 years.

I recently chose Hill Country Veterinary Hospital because of the culture the hospital fosters. Dr. Sandell has found how to balance providing consistent, high-quality care while maintaining a friendly, supportive environment. I appreciate that many clients have been trusting their pets to her care for decades and I’m happy to be a part of the team.

My favorite areas of practice include dermatology, internal medicine (particularly endocrinology), cardiology and preventative care. I most enjoy finding solutions for people to their pets’ problems and even better yet, helping people find better ways to prevent problems. I know that your pets are your family and I look forward to helping you take the best care of them possible!

I have been enjoying the veterinary adventure since 2001. As for many in this field, my decision to become a veterinarian came quite early. After completing my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A & M University, I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine.

My family and I spent the last decade in the great state of Maine where I practiced both general and specialty medicine. I am proud to be credentialed by the American Board of Veterinary practitioners.

Our recent move to Austin has allowed me to meet so many wonderful patients- and the people who love them. Southern hospitality is alive and well at Hill Country Veterinary Clinic!
